Hello, I’m Annie Ridout. I’ve been a journalist, non-fiction author and poet for some years but I now spend most of my time writing essays on Substack, and teaching and coaching other writers who would like to start or grow their own Substack.

In-line with the subject of this workshop - the art of the personal essay - I’m going to start with a personal story.

Then, I’ll move into some ideas for writing your own personal essays - gathering ideas, getting started, filtering information to include or leave out - and I’ll offer some prompts for you to work through.
