Why I joined Substack, as a writer

Including: how I started my online writing career, back in 2008, the exact amount I earned in advances for my non-fiction book deals across four years and how Substack saved me during a plateau.

Welcome to the first episode of The Creative Way podcast. I’m Annie Ridout, a non-fiction author, journalist, ghostwriter, poet and bestselling writer on Substack.

I write personal essays under my name, Annie Ridout, and I run a writers’ membership called The Creative Way Collective.

Lastly, I run a platform on Substack about neurodivergence and creativity, called We Hyperfocus.

This episode is about why I started writing on Substack, harking back to the good old blogging days, trying to be a full-time author, how much I actually earned, in advances, while I was trying that, and how I came to start writing on Substack.

I’m a big fan of Substack. It’s made me feel like more of a writer than any of my book deals or journalism commissions. I explain why, in this episode.

Let me know what you think of it. And pop any questions/suggestions in the comments. I’d love to hear from you.

Annie x

Ps. The next episode will be answering the question: ‘What makes you a real writer?’. Dropping at the same time, next Monday.
